A 10-year-old girl was killed and a 12-year-old boy was seriously injured after police say they were run over by a car driven by the girl's mother in New Rochelle.
Investigators say Shirley Lojano and her friend, Johannes, were struck by an SUV driven by the girl's mother in the driveway of an apartment building at 240 Drake Ave.
Witnesses tell News 12 that the mother thought the car was in park in the driveway, but somehow the gear shifted and caused the car to roll backward and over the two children. Police believe the kids may have jumped out beforehand, and when the car started rolling backward they got caught between the door and the building.
Shirley was taken to Westchester Medical Center, but never recovered. The boy was taken to Jacobi Medical Center with a broken leg.
The mother of the SUV will not be charged with a crime. Police have ruled the incident an accident.
