A man was arrested in Mount Vernon Friday after allegedly firing a shotgun during what police thought was a hostage situation.
Police say they received a call at around 2:30 p.m. about shots being fired at 433 South Seventh Ave. Officers who were stationed nearby as a part of Operation Protect rushed to the scene and encountered a man with a shotgun in the vestibule of the house.
The responding officers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon. Once the man was disarmed, the officers entered the residence and found another person inside. Both people were taken into custody. The suspect who was seen holding the shotgun is now facing weapons charges.
Inside the house on South Seventh Avenue police say they also found packages of marijuana, leading them to believe it may have been a drug deal gone awry. No one was injured during the incident.
