The city of Yonkers is taking extra steps to make sure cooling towers are free from Legionnaires' disease.
Riverside High School tested positive for legionella bacteria last week. Officials say the school's cooling tower has been cleaned and disinfected and is ready for the first day of classes.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano has ordered all city-owned cooling towers be inspected.
The tower in front of the Grinton Will Library on Central Avenue will get an extra inspection tomorrow. As part of regular maintenance, the tower is power washed and treated with a chemical each year and serviced each month. As an extra precaution, the city says an independent contractor will come in twice a year instead of once a year to inspect the cooling tower for diseases. "I breathe the same air that the staff and the public breathes and I want to make sure it's safe for not just myself, but my staff and the public as well," says Supervisor of Custodians Russell Martinez.
The recent outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the Bronx killed 12 people and sickened more than 100 others.
