Transportation officials are alerting commuters about some closures along the New York State Thruway as construction on the new Tappan Zee Bridge continues.
Officials tell News 12 that numerous closures and detours will take place on ramps and roads leading to the bridge this week. The good news is that most of the work will be happening overnight so the majority of drivers may not be affected.
The I-87/northbound 287 westbound entrance ramp to the Tappan Zee Bridge at exit 9 will be affected. There will be lane closures on both the northbound and southbound sides of the Thruway. Each day the schedule changes, and some closures will be during the day.
White Plains Road in Tarrytown will be closed today and tomorrow from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Traffic to the span will be detoured about a mile and a half east on Route 119 to interchange 8A in Elmsford.
Also, the toll both system on the bridge will be changing. According to reports, the Thruway Authority is working to build electronic toll systems on the span while the new bridge is being built.
The new tolls will scan drivers E-ZPasses or take a picture of the car's license plate and later send the owner a bill in the mail. The new systems should be in place by late next year.
