Mourners remembered Zelle Andrews as a powerful pioneer in the fight for equality for LGBT rights and much more across Westchester.
Nearly 100 people gathered at the Scarsdale Congregational Church to remember Andrews on Saturday. "She was an extraordinary person," said friend Shelly Mayer. "Really ahead of her time as an advocate for gay and lesbian people, as a progressive voice for Westchester."
Andrews became the county's first liaison to the LGBT community in 1994. Friends said Andrews made personal sacrifices, including the understanding of her family, to advance the cause for the greater good.
Her activism extended to women's equality and reproductive rights.
"I think the message to all of us is to look at the work that she's done and try to take on the responsibility to carry it forward," said White Plains Mayor Tom Roach. "That's the best way to honor her."
Andrews died Feb. 2 at age 78. She is survived by her partner of 16 years.
