News 12 is hearing from local NAACP leaders after racial taunts were made at a high school varsity basketball game in Dutchess county last weekend.
News 12 has learned a fan made a "racially charged noise" when a Spring Valley player was shooting foul shots during their game against Roy C Ketcham on Saturday.
"What happened over the weekend in Wappingers Falls, I think, was really disgusting," said Willie Trotman, who leads the Spring Valley NAACP.
In separate community letters, superintendents of the East Ramapo and Wappingers school districts both called what happened disturbing.
The superintendent of Wappingers, Dr. Dwight Bonk, says the person responsible has been identified and the issue is being handled in accordance with the district's student code of conduct.
Superintendent Bonk tells News 12, "incidents such as this will not be tolerated within our district. We take these issues very seriously."
This is one of several incidents we've told you about in recent years at high school athletic competitions in our area.
Because of the past situations, local NAACP leaders want the Section I athletic conference to have policies and procedures in place for the future.
Wilbur Aldridge, NAACP Regional director says, “that anyone who participated in that kind of taunting activity would be ejected from any sports activity."
NAACP Spring Valley’s Trotman says, "that they [Section I] will actually step in and work directly with the superintendents of these schools as opposed to the superintendents working with them. That they will actually come down and do an independent investigation."
Section I tells News 12 its policy when an incident of bias or hate occurs is that the districts conduct a prompt and thorough investigation.
The interim superintendent of East Ramapo schools met with the Spring Valley boys basketball team on Monday saying, "Our conversation was reflective and insightful. I am beyond proud of our athletes for their perseverance and the humility they have demonstrated this week."
