Heavy precipitation and a storm surge flooded coastal parts of Mamaroneck Friday.

In the Orienta neighborhood, winds were blowing so hard that it was hard to stand upright. Gusts also knocked down power lines and trees -- and officials said the worst of the nor'easter hadn't even hit yet.

"It's pretty rough," said Joe Russo, Mamaroneck's harbormaster. "You don't want to be on the water."

With another high tide not arriving until midnight, authorities said they expected the flooding to worsen. The direction of the wind has a serious impact on how that goes down. According to Russo, a wind blowing out of the north will blow surging water off into the Long Island Sound. But if it shifts to come out of the northwest, it could push water ashore.

"From 9, 10 o'clock tonight to 2 or 3 in the morning, it will be critical," Russo said.
