The diesel fuel leaking from the sunken tugboat in the Hudson River appears to have caused minimal to no damage along the shoreline, officials say.
The tugboat, named "The Specialist," had a fuel capacity of about 5,000 gallons, which is about the size of a 15-foot backyard swimming pool.
Divers who went down to the wreck say they believe they found the source of that leak.
"They did locate what they believe to be a broken pipe that was to the fuel tank that the divers did secure," says Cmdr. Marc Sennick, of the U.S. Coast Guard. "We think that is going to result in less sheening."
Absorbent booms have been placed in the river to help keep the fuel from spreading to sensitive areas like the Piermont Marsh.
Coast Guard officials say the diesel fuel in the river is evaporating due to its light weight.
The Coast Guard, along with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, is continuing to monitor the situation.
