A Monday morning oil spill sent several gallons seeping down a drain pipe in Eastchester when a delivery truck malfunctioned on White Plains Road.
Officials say a truck driver noticed that his vehicle was leaking oil around 8 a.m.
Firefighters arrived to find the black oil pouring down a drain pipe, but cleanup crews say they were able to respond before it leaked into the water.
"None of it went into the Bronx River at all," says Andre Marshall, who is supervising the cleanup. "Luckily, we were able to get here before anything was able to get too far away."
Another recent spill sent more than 5,500 gallons of home heating oil into a storm drain that flows into the river on Bronx River Road in Yonkers.
Officials say the latest spill was caused by a pump malfunction in the delivery truck.
"We're on a municipal water system. No water comes out of the Bronx River, there's no hazard there. Anybody driving in the area should use caution, as emergency vehicles are working in the area," said Capt. Richard Dempsey, of the Eastchester Fire Department.
Officials say the leak will not pose a threat to the public. The oil delivery company says the truck lost only between five and seven gallons of oil.
