Clarkstown officials are calling on area malls to take steps to increase their security.

The push for additional safety measures comes after a New Jersey woman committed suicide by jumping from the fourth floor of the Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack. It marked the sixth death from falls or jumps at the mall in the past 10 years.

Clarkstown Deputy Supervisor Shirley Lasker and others are calling on mall officials to implement upgrades such as higher railings to deter potential jumpers.

Edmund Hartnett, a security consultant and former Yonkers police commissioner, strongly suggests that additional measures be taken at the Palisades Mall. He says the problem is that private corporations are often reluctant to spend money if not absolutely necessary.

Clarkstown and Palisades officials met last year to discuss security concerns, but nothing came of it.
