There were plenty of events throughout Westchester County on Monday for Veterans Day, including one in the City of White Plains.

Former servicemen and elected officials gathered Monday morning outside City Hall for an annual Veterans Day event.

Besides veterans, participants included White Plains schools, city officials and local nonprofits to honor and support attendees.

United States Airforce Col. Staci Coleman, a White Plains native, was the guest speaker.

"Here we are reminded not only of the sacrifices made by veterans from across the country," said Col. Coleman, "but also by those who grew up, lived and served from our own hometown, White Plains, New York."

White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach emphasized the importance of our veterans, describing his own experience growing up with a father and aunt in the Navy.

"This is a country that has always had a citizen army," said Mayor Roach. "As we've come into wars, either through enlistment or being drafted, people have stood up for what we hold dear as a nation."

He later surprised Col. Coleman by officially proclaiming this day in her honor.

"It feels really good to be honored in such a way. It shows that the great city of White Plains does appreciate their veterans," says Coleman.

Following the event at City Hall, there was another brief ceremony at American Legion Post #135.
