Car dealer hopes for holiday-weekend luck
Local car dealers who are expected to lose their GM or Chrysler contracts are hoping Memorial Day brings in new clients.
Marc Treiber, president of Rallye Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Monroe, learned recently that he's one of almost 800 Chrysler dealers and 1,100 GM dealers nationwide whose Chrysler or General Motors contracts won't be renewed.
The cuts are supposed to be cost-cutting moves for the auto industry, but Treiber says taking successful businesses out of the mix doesn't add up.
"Someone needs to do the math," he says. "We don't cost the manufacturers. We help them. Manufacturers never sold a car in their life. Car dealers sell cars."
Treiber says he plans on taking legal action to keep his contract with Chrysler. But no matter what happens, Treiber will still sell Suzukis, run a service shop and stay in business in Monroe.
He's hoping the holiday weekend will attract buyers who value his business.
