Men, women and children of all ages gathered Sunday evening at the Poetry Garden in Mamaroneck to share their sorrow and their grief.
The solemn gathering was to remember 43-year-old Molly Donovan and her 6-year-old son Michael Donovan Volpe. The two died Thursday after they were struck by a mini school bus while walking to school on Mamaroneck Avenue.
The incident left the community in shock.
"I was in Europe. My wife sent me an article about it, and it stopped me in my tracks. I don't think we've had this kind of thing happen in our community in the 18 years that I've been here. It was devastating and I couldn't stop thinking about it," said Jonathan Silver, of Mamaroneck.
Resident Harriet Bright also came to express her sorrow.
"I wanted to be close to everyone in the community and also show our support and solidarity for what's going on and to find a way to grieve and process," she said.
"My heart breaks for this family. He was graduating kindergarten -- it's hard not to feel so sad. It was just a tragic thing to happen in our community," said mourner Ellen Silver.
