A bus distributor is cementing roots in Yorktown with a new facility.
Bird Bus Sales and Service will settle into what was once a Kia dealership on Route 202 in Yorktown. It is one of the largest distributers of electric school buses.
"To work with the town, to work with the local school districts to help convert all buses on the road to 100% electric," says Robert Reichenback, president of Bird Bus Sales & Service. “The first electric bus distribution to a school district will be Croton Harmon this month."
The company is already working with Croton-Harmon school district for a delivery this month.
Taxpayers won't need to worry about extra costs.
"The back taxes on this property since it's been vacant for 5 1/2 years was over $200,000," says Yorktown Town Supervisor Matthew Slater.
The town plans to offset property tax burdens created by payment in lieu of taxes agreements by using back taxes paid in the sale of the property to create a Taxpayer Protection Fund.
The entire facility is expected to be ready by the end of this year. The service area is expected to be up and running as early as the end of October.
