Firefighters managed to contain a brush fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon at Depew Park in the center of Peekskill.
Some 25 firefighters arrived at the scene of the blaze at around 2 p.m. after receiving reports of smoke from one of their colleagues who lives in the area.
The firefighters, who came armed with portable pumps and 1,000 feet of hose line, had trouble getting the flames under control before they reached the surrounding houses.
"Winds are making it tough, the dry ground is making it tough," says Peekskill Fire Chief John Pappas. "We're in a forest fire warning right now throughout the state."
Officials say the fire started at a popular campfire area in the park, which is often used by teenagers. Another brush fire broke out on the same spot a week ago, and fire officials believe teenagers are to blame.
"There is no reason to start a fire," Pappas says. "If it's too cold in the woods, just stay out of them."
Tuesday's brush fire affected 4 to 5 acres of parkland. No homes were damages as the result of the blaze, and no one was hurt.
