The Bridgeport Police Department’s Homicide Unit is taking a new approach to solving cold cases—a true crime-style video series.
“Under Chief Porter, there’s really been an emphasis on connecting with the community through social media,” said Detective Jeffrey Holtz.
That priority led the homicide unit to create Park City Confidential, which launched in August and just released the second episode. It takes viewers inside what Holtz calls the “execution-style murder” of Heriberto Marquez, 24. Marquez was shot Aug. 29, 2020, at the intersection of Iranistan Avenue and Hanover Street just before midnight.
Holtz sat down with News 12 to talk about the series.
“The ultimate goal is to get the community involved and ultimately phone in tips and any information that they can to help us get these cases where they need to be and that would be an arrest,” Holtz explained.
Each episode features body camera footage, radio transmissions and insight from detectives who are working the case. But perhaps the most powerful part of these episodes is the families.
“The community really sees how these crimes affect families,” Holtz said about those interviews.
In episode two, Marquez’s mother, Elizabeth Delgado, gets emotional recalling her son’s love and how hard it is to live daily without answers about who took him.
“Nobody would want to walk in my shoes,” Delgado says through tears.
Marquez’s uncle, Juan Ballester, who was like a second father to Marquez, is also featured. Ballester shares how he raced to the crime scene and found “a horror movie.”
Both he and Delgado also plead for anyone with information on the case to come forward.
"You, the public, can make a difference," Ballester states.
Each episode runs for five to 10 minutes and tells a story that still needs an ending. In Marquez’s case, a white SUV fled the area after the shooting, according to police. They previously released an image of a suspect vehicle and said they have names of potential suspects but need more.
“We have a lot of great detectives here, and they all know that to solve these cases, we need help from the community. And that's why in these videos, we speak to the people out there that can help us,” Holtz told News 12.
Holtz said so far, the response to the two episodes out has been really positive.
“We did get tips on the first episode. It's moved the case further along. Is it to the point where we can make an arrest on that first case? Not yet, but it helped a little bit. We don't expect it to be instantly solving cases. It just started. We're hoping as the series grows, more and more people understand what we're trying to do,” Holtz explained.
Both episodes of Park City Confidential can be seen on the police department’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
Anyone with information on Marquez’s murder is asked to contact Detective Keith Hanson at 203-581-5243 or 203-576-TIPS.
