A 10-year-old Queens boy is recovering after falling almost 30 feet off a cliff at a quarry.
Police say the boy slipped and fell while hiking with his family at around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cranberry Lake Preserve. They say he lost his footing while playing on some rocks and tumbled into the mud and rock 25 feet below.
The boy's father, an emergency room doctor, provided care until crews arrived with equipment. More than two dozen first responders came to the scene.
It took the emergency crews about 30 minutes to reach the boy and get him into a waiting ambulance. North Plains Fire Chief Andrew Seicol says crews hoisted a ladder into the quarry and placed the boy into a rescue basket. The basket was moved up the ladder with the help of a safety line.
Chief Seicol says the multi-agency teamwork was the key to getting the boy to safety.
The little boy suffered neck, back and arm injuries and is listed in stable condition at Westchester County Medical Center.
