A new bill would allow anyone 14 or older in New York to get immunizations - even if their parents object.

Lawmakers who proposed the bill say the change is needed because too many parents believe unsupported claims that vaccines are not safe.

The proposed legislation comes as New York continues to deal with a measles outbreak in Rockland County. Statistics released by the county last week show that out of 144 confirmed cases of measles, 118 of the patients say they were never vaccinated.

A pediatric emergency physician in Rockland County tells News 12 that she's in favor of the new bill because she says prevention is key. She says getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent the spread of viral infections like measles.

There is no word on when lawmakers will vote on the proposed legislation.
