Parents and teachers rallied Wednesday with the hope that the state will restore funding to the district before it's too late.
Dozens of parents and teachers lined the intersection of Kisco and Maple avenues to fight against proposed budget cuts. Bedford school district administrators have major concerns over whether the state can help. They say Gap Elimination Adjustment has thrown the district into an $8.9 million deficit.
District administrators propose the only way to bridge the gap is to lay off teachers and increase taxes by 3.8 percent. Teachers say cuts will be devastating to the district.
"New York state needs to understand that education is a shared responsibility and that New York state has a responsibility to fund its schools the way they need to be funded," said Michael Groarke, president of the Bedford Teachers Association.
A representative from Assemblyman Buchwald's office tells News 12 that Buchwald is hopeful funding will come through.
