A fierce debate is brewing over gender identity and public bathrooms in Westchester County.
The discussion comes after a rare executive order by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio allowing people to pick the public bathroom and locker rooms of the gender with which they identify.
Shepard Verbas, of Portchester, was born female but does not currently identify as male or female. Verbas says that every trip to a public bathroom poses the risk of being a humiliating experience.
Verbas and other LGBTQ advocates say they think local lawmakers should sign a similar order that would impact all county office buildings.
Democrats in Westchester are said to be gauging support for such a bill, but it faces stiff opposition from Republicans, especially County Executive Rob Astorino.
"You cannot have a man choose to be something else, on any given day, and walk into a women's locker room and not expect to have issues," Astorino has said. "And I think we've got to go with common sense on this, not political correctness."
Judy Troilo, of LGBT community services center The LOFT, says the issue in Westchester comes down to being about human rights, not being politically correct.
