It's not gonna be so easy to remove two barges that ran aground on Long Island Sound. They came ashore yesterday along Woodmont Beach in Milford. Last night though, they floated a mile away to Anawan Avenue in West Haven. The Coast Guard, along with the barge's owner, Buchanan Marine, have to tow them out without scraping a hole on the bottom. The barges are beached above jagged rocks. One longtime Coast Guard veteran says this is gonna be a lengthy and difficult process. Uh, it could take a few hours, but they're gonna have to wait for this wind I think to let up before you put any small boats in the water, uh, with these conditions. It's taking more than a few hours. Crews have already attached tow lines to the barges, but they were unable to free the barges tonight at high tide, so they plan to make another attempt at that coming up tomorrow.

We are learning more now about how two massive barges washed up on shore in Milford during tonight's storm. News 12 Connecticut's Justin Devellas reports. Coast Guard officials say not one but 2 140 ft hopper barges broke free from their designated moorings and drifted 5 miles here to Woodmont Beach in Milford. I've been coming to Woodmont for most of my life. I just moved here. I have never seen anything like this. Medvedal was one of dozens of people who came out to get a closer look. There is a line of traffic that I have probably never seen, and there are people everywhere because this is extraordinary. Heavy rain and strong winds caused the barges to break free around 3:30 on Thursday, Coast Guard officials say they're currently empty, and the owner is working to have the barges salvaged and refloated. But doing that during dangerous weather could be hazardous. I've never seen anything like this. I always see it far away. I always say, oh look at the cruise ship, but To see it up close it's huge. It's like 3 buses. Alex Monteiro is another Milford resident who saw videos of the barges on social media. He's hoping the work starts fast and ends with a successful resolution. I have no idea. Hopefully they can tie something to it, pull it out. I hope everyone stays safe. Coast Guard officials say no injuries have been reported and no pollution has been reported either. Officials are reminding people to stay clear of the area.
