An event was held the Yonkers Public Library Thursday to discuss banned books during Banned Books Week.

Every year, the Office for Intellectual Freedom builds a list of challenged books from submissions by both librarians and teachers who fear that some books, including “The Kite Runner,” “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “13 Reasons Why” could face the threat of censorship.

Librarians say banning books is not just telling someone they can't or shouldn't read something.

"Everybody should have the freedom of choice to read what they want and expand their horizon,” says Ruth Rosner, the Yonkers Public Library head librarian. "It doesn't mean that you have to agree with everything that's said in the book or that you even have to read a book." 

She also told News 12 that the banned book of yesterday is the classic of today.
