Anti-marijuana advocates protested outside Westchester's county office building Monday to voice their opposition to legal marijuana.

Protester Jeffrey Veatch says he lost his son to a drug overdose and believes the problem with marijuana is that it exposes young people to unnecessary risks.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state Democratic leaders vowed to make New York the 11th state in the U.S. to legalize recreational marijuana and spread the profits from the sale across the state at the start of this year. Cuomo says it's not clear if they have enough votes to follow through with the legislation with a few weeks left in the 2019 legislative year.

Some counties in the Hudson Valley, including Rockland and Putnam, say they won't allow the sale of legal marijuana, even if it's law. Mount Pleasant Police Chief Paul Oliva says it presents too many risks to public safety.

The anti-marijuana advocates were also calling on Westchester County to opt out of any legalized marijuana. County Executive George Latimer has been adamant not to make any decisions until lawmakers in Albany have their say.
