The Poughkeepsie woman accused of murdering her fiance on the Hudson River appeared briefly in Orange County court Monday as her defense attorney submitted motions on her behalf.
Prosecutors say Angelika Graswald tampered with Vincent Viafore's kayak causing him to drown in Cornwall in April. They say Graswald intentionally removed the drain plug from the top of his kayak.
She has pleaded not guilty, but prosecutors say she confessed to the crime during an interview with police.
Graswald has recanted that confession, saying Orange County police questioned her for six hours before she broke down and admitted to something she says isn't true.
Her attorney, Richard Portale, is under a gag order and could only comment on what happened in court Monday.
But he has previously told News 12 that there was a language barrier between Graswald and investigators during the interrogation. She is a native of Latvia.
She remains in the Orange County Jail with bail set at $9 million. Her murder trial is tentatively set for next spring.
