After a nearly five-hour Zoom meeting Monday night, Airmont trustees voted on six laws - most of which make it easier for the Jewish community to practice their religion.
Among the decisions that were made:
  • ·        You can't make loud noises before 9 a.m. on weekends.
  • ·        Cars can park in the street overnight.
  • ·        People are allowed to convert garages into living spaces for large families.
  • ·        There is no limit on how many trees people can cut down from their property.
  • ·        No longer a requirement to warn residents and political candidates about illegal campaign contributions.
Many residents in the meeting worry these changes cater too much to one religious group.
"It assumes that everybody who lives in Airmont has the same needs, and that's not true. We have a diverse community," says Danielle Meehan, Airmont resident.

Also during last night's meeting, Airmont Village Mayor Nathan Bubel made a motion to remove Brian Downey as deputy mayor. The vote stems from several gun-related charges against Downey. The resolution did not pass, and Downey remains the deputy mayor.
