State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that he has filed a lawsuit seeking to shut down a Buffalo debt collection company that has been harassing people.
During a news conference, Cuomo played a recording of a phone call he says was made by a representative of Benning-Smith Group, which includes 13 debt collection agencies. The caller can be heard referring to the debtor as "an uneducated reject" and "totally ghetto."
Cuomo says Benning-Smith Group has been the subject of 850 complaints filed with his office, the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau.
