Thursday was the first "Acts of Kindness Day" in Yorktown.
It was a day for the community to do a good deed in honor of a local hero.
Capt. Kenneth Sgroi was a member of the Yorktown Police Department who died suddenly in January.
The police department decided to turn their grief into action and create a legacy for the captain.
They collected donations for United for the Troops, which sends care packages and the comforts of home to soldiers abroad, and Hope's Door, which helps victims of domestic violence.
The Yorktown police will continue to collect donations in Sgroi's name for the rest of the month.
