Animals rights activists say lions, tigers and bears at the Kelly Miller Circus are being abused.

Protesters held signs Tuesday which read "Circus Equals Slavery" and "Torture Does Not Equal Entertainment" near the circus tent's entrance, located on the ground of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Verplanck. They say Kelly Miller's training is abusive and argued with circus workers who joined the protest, but instead held smiley-face posters.

The group believes the animals that perform in this circus and others are not treated well. One protester specifically rallied for Anna Louise, an elephant which they say was taken from the wild 31 years ago.

A spokesperson for the Kelly Miller Circus says the protesters have a right to be at the circus.

According to Kelly Miller's website, there are 11 staff members whose sole purpose is tending to the care, comfort and welfare of the animals.

The circus has more shows scheduled for Wednesday night.
