News 12 takes a look at the 61st annual St. Patrick's Day parade in Pearl River.

The parade, which begins at 1:30 p.m. this Sunday, is recognized as one of the largest in the state behind New York City.

"It doesn't matter what your background is, what your faith is. We celebrate as one community," said John McGowan, who is the grand marshal this year. "It means something personally for me and my family as well."

News 12 spoke with McGowan inside the Gracie Rose. The restaurant is honored by this year's parade as the Businesspeople of the year.

McGowan, a former Rockland County legislator and New York state assemblyman says he marched as a local kid and played bag pipes as an adult.

He says it's a day that has long held significance in his life.

"Thirty years ago, in 1995, my dad passed away on parade day," said McGowan. "It's always held a special spot for my family. Kind of means something a little more. Always think of my dad on this day, so I'll be thinking of him as I march down the avenue."

The Orangetown Highway Department is doing its part to make it a clean and safe event.

People will see a new type of barricades used this year, along with dozens of large trucks to protect the public.

The parade is sponsored by the Men and Women of the Rockland County Ancient Order of Hibernians.
