Twenty-five kids celebrated their graduation from the Greenburgh Police Department Summer Youth Camp program. The graduation ceremony took place at Veterans Park in Ardsley. Some instructors say the program is more like boot camp than summer camp. The kids get to experience what a real police recruit would go through at the academy. The seven-week program included physical training, passing a first aid test, CPR training, a water safety course and even learning police stop and arrest tactics. Instructors say a few of the kids come into the program with some disciplinary issues but they disappear by graduation.Greenburgh Police Chief John Kapica says after nine years of the summer program a former graduate may soon be on the force. Fans of the program say whether the academy graduates go on to a career in law enforcement is beside the point. They say what?s important is the program teaches the children to respect themselves and each other.
