An Army National Guardsman from Suffern told News 12 Friday that he was inspired to join the military after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Joe Selchick was only 11 at the time of the attacks.
"I saw a soldier on TV," Selchick says. "He was with the president. I said, 'I want to stand up for all the people who lost their lives.'"
He says he became so immersed in the news coverage of the attacks that his mom started to worry.
"I needed to get him distracted," says his mother, Ann Selchick. "So I got him a dog."
Selchick, now 25, remained focused on his goal and eventually joined the National Guard. He is now part of the joint task force fighting terrorism.
