A second Democratic challenger has entered the race for Mount Vernon mayor.

Councilwoman Deborah Reynolds announced her candidacy Saturday, and plans to put taxes and quality-of-life issues at the top her agenda.

"A lot of people in Mount Vernon are losing their homes. There's over 400 homes in foreclosure currently and people cannot deal with the high taxes," said Reynolds.

Reynolds is joining Democratic state Sen. Ruth Hassell Thompson, who announced her bid last week.

Reynolds says her experience in the corporate world sets her apart from the other candidates. She says the city has been mismanaged by incumbent Democratic Mayor Ernie Davis.

In February, Davis was sentenced to one-year probation and fined $10,000, after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor federal tax evasion charges. Davis says he was careless with his personal finances, not the city's.

Davis says his experience in office sets him apart from his competition.

The primary election will be held in September.
