Twenty-seven residents of a Huntington Station assisted living facility had to be relocated after a driver slammed their car into the building late last night.
Suffolk County police said officers responded to Manor Haven Adult Home at 222 Columbia St. around 10 p.m.
Investigators said the Honda Civic was traveling on McKay Road when the car left the roadway and struck the building.
Witnesses said the driver plowed through the fence at the corner of Columbia Street, went through the bushes and into the side of the building.
Video from the scene shows the red car with significant front-end damage still at the scene as water gushed out of the building.
Suffolk County police said the driver fled the scene before officers arrived.
Manor Haven is a New York State-licensed, 32-bed facility, according to the state Department of Health.
A man who identified himself as the administrator of the facility told News 12 that staff initiated its emergency plan and transferred the residents to Woodbury Heights Nursing Home. News 12 reached out to that facility but is waiting to hear back.
Suffolk County Fire officials said the crash caused flooding in the basement and the utilities had to be shut off.
The Town of Huntington Building Inspector was on the scene assessing the damage.
A Red Cross spokesperson said volunteers went to the scene and provided support, including blankets and toiletries.
The investigation is ongoing.
