Peekskill police are warning people about a groundhog that tested positive for rabies.

Officers responded to the 800 block of Main Street earlier this week for a report of an aggressive groundhog.

County officials say the animal chased a woman who was walking her dog near Lepore Park. They say the groundhog did not make contact with the woman or her dog.

Due to the animal's behavior, Animal Control had it euthanized and tested.

The Westchester County Department of Health says the animal did test positive for rabies.

Anyone who may have interacted with the animal or may have been bitten or scratched should contact Animal Control at 914-862-1430 or the Department of Health at 914-864-7359.

Officials also say pet rabies vaccinations should be kept up to date to protect them.
