A former Chestertown official has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for shooting a DoorDash driver in Orange County.

John Reilly III, 49, was sentenced in Orange County Court. He was convicted in March on assault and other charges stemming from the incident.

Authorities say Reilly was serving as Chester Town Highway Superintendent when he shot 28-year-old Alpha Barry last May.

Barry had gone to Reilly’s home after getting lost and losing phone battery, asking if he had placed an order.Reilly told him to leave, and when Barry tried to drive away, Reilly fired at the vehicle. Barry suffered serious injuries.

Barry’s attorney called the sentence “surprisingly high.”

Last month, Reilly’s wife pleaded guilty to tampering with physical evidence.Authorities say 46-year-old Selina Nelson-Reilly deleted 17 videos from a smart doorbell camera that captured the shooting.
