Lorraine Hansberry Way: Renowned Croton playwright honored with street renaming

Sunday marked Lorraine Hansberry Day in Croton-on-Hudson as members of the charitable organization, named in her honor, celebrated her contributions with the naming of a street in her memory.
The new street sign that reads Lorraine Hansberry Way will be mounted at a section of Cleveland Drive for all to see and appreciate.
Hansberry, a playwright civil rights activist and longtime Croton resident, is best remembered for her play "A Raisin in the Sun."
The Lorraine Hansberry Coalition is a group of volunteers who strive to celebrate Hansberry's life and her connection to the Hudson Valley.
"This is the annual event on May 17 that we celebrate for Lorraine Hansberry's birthday...Many people don't know that she actually lived in Croton and is buried here," said Signe Bergstrom, of the Lorraine Hansberry Coalition.
Organizers said the new sign is a much-deserved honor.
"She had a tremendous impact on culture in the United States, and I think this work to keep her legacy alive and keep citizens aware of her impact to this day is really important, and I value it," said Croton resident Aaron Lamar.
Hansberry, whose birthday is on May 19, died of pancreatic cancer at just 34 years old. She was laid to rest at Bethel Cemetery in Croton.
