Extra police were out in full force Wednesday night in the Hudson Valley.

It's not only one of the busiest travel days of the year, but also when police say they see a lot of DWI cases.

Thanksgiving Eve has turned into a big time for social gatherings, especially for college students coming home for the holidays.

"People come home from college and you see all your friends, going out to the bar," says Lara, who lives in Westchester County.

Additional patrols will be deployed throughout Haverstraw as part of an enhanced DWI enforcement initiative, according to police.

Other law enforcement agencies around the Hudson Valley say they will also be increasing patrols.

The New York State Police will have sobriety checkpoints.

On top of that, the Haverstraw police chief is urging people to be safe and plan ahead.

"Call a taxi, call a rid-share company, call a friend, assign a designated driver," says Chief John Gould.
