Stony Point police say four people, including one of their on-duty officers, suffered minor injuries last week in a collision.

The incident happened last Thursday at the corner of 9W and Wayne Avenue in Stony Point and was caught on a surveillance video that was given to News 12.

Authorities say their investigation determined that the driver of a pickup truck failed to yield while attempting to make a turn and cut off the officer’s cruiser while he was on routine patrol.

They say a third vehicle was struck during the collision.

Three people, plus the officer, were treated at the hospital.

Police say the intersection has a speed limit of 40 mph, and that their investigation shows the officer, who appears to be traveling fast, wasn’t speeding.

“Upon review of the footage, the police vehicle is the only vehicle traveling in a normal manner. All other vehicles are either stopping or starting in traffic. This makes it difficult to accurately gauge the speed of the police vehicle,” says Stony Point Lt. Danny Schoales. “The contributing factor to the accident is the other vehicle’s failure to yield the right of way. We are fortunate that all involved only sustained minor injuries.”

Schoales says an accident reconstruction would determine the cruiser’s rate of speed but is only performed for collisions involving injuries that are life-threatening or fatal. He says it was not conducted for this incident as a result.

The crash, however, remains under departmental review.

Schoales says the officer involved has not yet returned to duty due to his injuries and that no tickets will be issued to the driver of the pickup truck.
