A 36-year-old man from Newburgh was convicted in the murder of his 76-year-old male roommate inside their apartment.

James Rich faces life in prison for killing George Harding at the Varick Homes Complex last March.

Orange County prosecutors say police were initially called to the residence following a call for help, and that Rich was charged with possessing cocaine. Prosecutors say when he was released, Rich returned to the apartment and killed the victim.

Surveillance footage showed Rich discarding bags of bloody clothing with the Harding’s DNA, according to court proceedings.

Police found Rich hiding in a different apartment with Harding’s cellphone on March 17, 2023.

Rich faces 25-years to life in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for August.
