It was quite a hot one Friday, but one local business improvement district hoped that wouldn’t stop people from coming to support shops and restaurants.

The Yonkers Waterfront Live concert brought hundreds to support their community and local businesses, as it does every summer Friday night, put on by the Yonkers Downtown Waterfront BID.

Organizers were worried about a low turnout Friday night due to the heat and humid conditions. But those fears were unfounded and a large crowd attended.

Events like this are crucial to businesses in Yonkers, with BID Executive Director Sara Brody saying it promotes economic development. She also says Friday definitely was a bit of a dip from a more temperate Friday night.

It does cost a bit for business owners, not only for a lack of foot traffic, but also because of additional electricity costs.

“Mostly it is important because the businesses rely on the economic funding that comes in as a result of these concerts, whether it's a drink, a meal, a quick snack, or whether someone finds a shop that says, ‘Hey I want to come back,’” says Brody.

The event did feature a cooling center to make conditions a bit more bearable and the riverfront location certainly helped as well.
