An eight-year long project to build affordable housing in northern Westchester was celebrated Tuesday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Officials marked the completion of Lewisboro Commons. It has 42 affordable apartments built through the New York State Homes and Community Renewal Office. They include units that have one to three bedrooms that range in price from about $1,000 a month to $1,800 a month for renters who make 50% through 60% of the area’s median income.

"I moved here in December and I couldn't believe my luck from winning the lottery for the apartments," said Kaniesha Carty, who moved with her family from the Bronx. "We have nature, fresh air, the good school district."

Carty's family, along with other residents, now has access to a wealth of amenities including, a clubhouse, gym, basketball court and a shuttle to the nearby Goldens Bridge Metro-North train station.

The housing complex is LEED certified and 100% electric.

Developers on the project said completing the project wasn't easy. They faced community backlash and lawsuits meant to stop it.

"It was contentious at times. There was a group of neighbors and local residents who were opposed to the development," said John Bainlardi, vice president of Wilder Balter Partners, Inc.

The $22 million project was paid for with federal, state and Westchester County funding all aimed at building affordable housing.

"Advancing climate-resilient and affordable housing like Lewisboro Commons is a key component of New York's comprehensive approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from buildings statewide and achieving Governor Hochul's goal to develop two million climate friendly homes by 2030," said Doreen Harris, President and CEO of NYSERDA, in a statement.
