Rockland officials honored two officers for their Sept. 11 recovery efforts by adding their names to the county's police memorial in New City.
The names of Deputy U.S. Marshal Zachariah Toros, of Nanuet, and NYPD Lt. Luis Lopez, of Suffern, were etched in stone Sunday at the remembrance ceremony.
Both men died last June from Sept. 11-related illnesses.
Hannah Gleeson says her brother-in-law Luis Lopez loved being an officer and spent months at Ground Zero. She says family members were deeply saddened when he developed a lung disease.
Toros' son, Jeremy, says his father was at Ground Zero for two weeks, and was shocked to find out he had cancer in 2013.
Though the honor is bittersweet for family members, they tell News 12 that they hope it's a reminder for all those who were at Ground Zero after Sept. 11 to go to the doctor and get checked out.
