Two people were killed and over 90 residents were displaced overnight by a fire that tore through a Plainfield apartment building. The fire broke out shortly after 1 a.m., forcing families to rush out into the street with little to no time to gather belongings. Andres Ixcuna, who lived on the second floor with his wife and 28-day-old baby, said the family escaped with nothing. “It was a nightmare," he said. “We didn’t even grab any papers, nothing for the baby. We came with empty hands.” City officials said they are still assessing the building to determine whether any of the units are safe to return to.
Plainfield Public Schools posted a statement on social media that said in part, “We are heartbroken by the loss of life and the impact on families, including members of our school community.”
