Rockland County has collected $718,000 from the owner of Evergreen Nursing Home in Spring Valley for several code and safety violations.

County leaders say a court injunction ordered the landlord to clean and secure the property after the 2021 fire, but that order was ignored, leading to fines piling up.

Officials say the property has remained unsecured and inhabited by homeless people since the fire. They add the owner still owes an extra $36,000 fine issued by the court for missing the deadline.

County Executive Ed Day called leaving the site as a reminder of the 2021 fire unacceptable. That fire claimed the lives of firefighter Jared Lloyd and resident Oliver Hueston.
