A two-alarm fire broke out inside an abandoned building on Jerome Avenue near 172nd Street just after 3 p.m. Friday, fire officials say.
The building, which at one point was a live poultry store and slaughterhouse, was empty when the fire began. Fire officials say there were no injuries.
At least 40 firefighters worked to control the blaze Friday evening. Before reporting to the scene, firefighters were alerted that the structure was not stable, which allowed fire officials to order all crew members out of the building before the fire progressed.
Fire officials have yet to determine the cause of the blaze.
