The Municipal Housing Authority of the City of Yonkers organized meals for nearly 300 seniors on Thanksgiving.
Due to strict coronavirus protocols in place this Thanksgiving, many seniors have the unfortunate reality of being alone this holiday.
Wilson Kimball, president of Municipal Housing Authority of the City of Yonkers, believes that right now is a great time to help others.
“There is nothing better than helping other people to put whatever issues you have into perspective and so this is a great time to do that and this is a great way to do it,” says Kimball. “We have so many seniors who are homebound, who don't have family, who just need a connection.”
Chef Peter Kelly, of X20 Xaviers on the Hudson, catered the meals. “I'm from a large family. I am number 10 of 12 who grew up in a housing project here in Yonkers not far from where this restaurant sits,” says Kelly. “I feel very fortunate to be able to do something very small for a group of people that I have a serious connection to.”
Residents receiving the food seemed to be more than grateful.
“I'm glad that someone thinks enough of us to come by and bring it, even with the pantries that we get,” says resident Louise Simmons. “Today is a day of Thanksgiving and this way everybody will have a meal.”
