An early morning fire displaced nine people in Yonkers.
Investigators say the fire sparked around 5:30 a.m. Sunday and engulfed the third floor of the home at 17 Chestnut St.
Yonkers Assistant Fire Chief Edward Cucolo was among the first to arrive. "We found smoke pouring out of the window on the top floor," says Cucolo.
Crews quickly attacked the flames, and more than 40 firefighters responded.
Fire officials say the flames were brought under control about 20 minutes later, but there was already excessive damage.
Vic Marie, a tenant in the building, says her apartment was spared, but her upstairs neighbors are now temporarily homeless.
The American Red Cross is offering emergency assistance to the family, who will be staying in a nearby hotel until they are allowed back in the home.
