A Yonkers building crumbled to the ground Saturday, forcing the evacuation of 10 residents in a nearby building.

Authorities say a passerby noticed a falling brick around 10:30 p.m. and called 911. The Yonkers Building Department commissioner ordered the vacant, three-story building at 179 Ashburton Ave. demolished after arriving at the scene.

"The front wall was ... unsupported," Commissioner John Meyer said. "The roof had collapsed. The third floor and second floor had also collapsed."

Crews were at the scene overnight tearing down the rest of the structure with bulldozers.

Tenants at nearby 181 Ashburton Ave. were ordered to leave as a precaution during the demolition. The building's owner says she has complained to the city before about the problem building, saying it was damaging her property and it was a haven for drug use.

The Red Cross is temporarily housing two of the 10 people evacuated from the nearby building.
