The U.S. Flag of Honor was raised during a ceremony Tuesday at Mount Vernon City Hall to honor slain detective Christopher Ridley.

The flag will fly at half-mast for one day at City Hall. The U.S. Flag of Honor was created after the terror attacks of Sept. 11 and honors officers all over the country who have died in the line of duty. The flag journeyed across oceans, where it was raised in Afghanistan and Iraq, to come to Mount Vernon.

During the ceremony, Ridley?s heartbroken family members said they were proud he is being honored. Mount Vernon Police Commissioner David Chong said it was fitting that the flag was flown at City Hall to ?honor our city?s son and hero, Det. Christopher Ridley.?

Meanwhile, a grand jury investigation is being conducted into Ridley?s death. Ridley was mistakenly shot in January by Westchester County police when he tried to break up a fight between two homeless people. Ridley was posthumously promoted to detective.
