A two-month Turn to Tara investigation reveals that dozens of bridges in the Hudson Valley are in need of repair.

The investigation comes as new data was released from the state comptroller's office.

While the first phase of the new Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge recently opened to much fanfare, it left News 12 to wonder about the conditions of other spans in Westchester.

Turn to Tara did a bit of digging and obtained a report card of sorts for all 768 crossings in the county. The data revealed that nearly half of them are considered structurally obsolete. There are at least 40 others in need of repairs, some of them past due for inspections.

There is one particularly troubling span in Tarrytown. It was built in 1925 and received the lowest score in the county. As of this summer, it was past due for inspection.

Turn to Tara showed the findings to some of the county's top lawmakers, who were equally as stunned.

According to state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, many other counties, including Rockland and Orange, are also plagued by aging infrastructure. DiNapoli estimates that the state needs $27 billion to repair or replace all of it.

The state comptroller's office says that in Rockland County, 3.6 percent of the bridges are structurally deficient. That number is about 15 percent in Orange County and just under 16 percent in Putnam County. In Westchester, more than 6 percent are deficient.
